In 1600, King Henry IV of France sent his future bride, Marie de'Medici, a lavish and unusual pre-wedding gift. She was greeted with a feast that appeared to feature roasted meats and seafood.

However, the "food" was actually intricately carved sugar sculptures. To top it off, Henry sent a life-sized sugar replica of himself on horseback to represent him during the wedding vows.
